Farewell to the Cyder House Players
Sadly after 2 years and some great performances at this music-lovers country pub, we have to say goodbye to the Cyder House Players. Congratulations to all the local musicians, including CULL, Adrian : FLYNN, Damien : GOO, David : IRVINE, Billy : JJMD : NEADS, Anthea : NICHOLLS, Gillie : Nour Hill : PEARSE, Chris : Prince, Andy : Source, The : SEUME, Tristan : Spotlight Canibal : Sunday's Child : Susie Clarke Band : WORRALL, Tom : WILSON-TAYLOR, Andy and many more, who made Shackleford such a wonderful place to be on a Tuesday night. It was the creation of Susie Clarke, a very talented young singer/sopngwriter, who plays guitar solo and with her band.
Farnham Free Festival (cancelled)
Sadly this years Farnham Free Festival to be held Sunday 22nd June at the Fox Inn, Lower Bourne, Nr Farnham has been cancelled due to complaints from the venues neighbours over parking. I wish that some of these music-haters would go live in a cave somewhere, instead of next to a lovely country pub thats just trying to survive in this cold climate for live music venues. It has just been a total waste of time for Micky Kemp, and musicians including Six Miles Away, Laura Colegate and all those involved with promoting and catering for this great event.

Once again its time to celebrate that great man, who had a wonderful idea. If you could just get rid of all the politicians, the world would be a better place. No, not Boris Johnson, but Guy Fawkes. For DISCiples see Famous Five
If you have seen the DISCiples over the last few years, come down and check out the Famous Five Band, they play the tracks you love and remember, they even look the same, well most of them do. At the end of 2007, 5 of the 6 DISCiples decided to break away and form a new band. This left the keyboard player (Nick van Dorp) with the Band name and little else to try and carry on. One of the most surprising things about the Famous Five Band, is that it has 6 members, but no dogs. It features the sweet tones of Liesbeth Eggink from Holland (lead vocals), Julia Krajewska (lead vocals), Simon Cowl (guitar and vocals), Andy Cooper (guitar), Mike Barden (bass guitar and keyboards), and Alan Cottrell (drums and percussion).

Grease is the word
Have the keys on your Yamaha Clavinova electronic keyboard started sticking in the down position, or lean to the left or right? If the answer is yes, then is likely that you have one of a rough batch produced using the wrong kind of grease. The great day has finally come
For anyone visiting a pub last Sunday, it was a great relief to finally be able to breathe. Yes, its true that many past patrons were missing, but that can easily be blamed on the sunny weather and the concert on TV. It felt good to reclaim all these public spaces for those who like to be able to see what you're drinking and whom you are drinking with. The publicans will eventually gain more business through this, and untill that happens they can console themselves by selling all the branded ashtrays and smoking memorabilia on E-Bay.
Grendel Stalks the Night....25 years on
Its amazing to think that its already 25 years since the creation of one of the epic songs in music history. Forget American Pie and even the wonderful Stairway to Heaven, are only minos by comparison, we are talking about a seventeen (yes 17) minute long masterpeice of prog-rock genius. It started out as many song lyrics do, as a poem written by the Band's lead singer Derek Dick, what do you mean you've never heard of him?, well ok, he was better known as Fish. He called the poem and later the song Grendel.
His inspiration came from the legend of Beowulf, a story also told in poetry and dating from Anglo-saxon times. Grendel, a demonic monster from the swamps, has been attacking Heorot, the Danish King's "Hall of the Hart", killing and eating anyone he can find. Beowulf comes from Sweden, to defend the hall and succeeds in slaying Grendel, when no-one else can, along with the beast's mother, and a dragon, just the good measure.
The Song begins gently with whispered lyrics, and gradually builds up to dizzy heights with pumping guitars, pounding drums, and shouted vocals, then fades again. It does this again and again thoughout its four parts, Heorot's plea and Grendel's awakening, Grendel's Journey, Lurker at the Threshold, and Finale.
